LT Maury C. Castaneda, USN(Ret.) - Senior Naval Science Instructor
Lieutenant Castaneda is a native of California. Following in the footsteps of his father, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy after high school graduation in 1994. Having a love for the sea and intrigued by its depth, he volunteered for submarine duty.
He attended Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, IL for bootcamp. Upon completion of recruit training, he continued his training at Naval Submarine School as a submarine Electronic Technician in Groton, CT. After a year of training and he would receive orders to USS LOUISVILLE (SSN 724) in Pearl Harbor, HI. Following his successful sea tour, he received orders back to Submarine School, this time as an instructor. During this tour he would go on to earn the prestigious Master Training Specialist certification and become the Naval Submarine School Instructor of the Year.
After his tour at Naval Submarine School, he received orders to back to Pearl Harbor, HI, this time aboard USS BUFFALO (SSN 715). During this tour he was selected for a commission under the Limited Duty Officer program. His first officer tour was at Commander Submarine Squadron Three as the Communications Officer in Pearl Harbor. From there, he would remain in Pearl Harbor, this time receiving orders to the Naval Submarine Support Command where he would serve as the Communications Officer and later as the Operations Officer. His last tour would take him to Naval Recruiting District St. Louis, where he would serve as a Division Officer and Officer Recruiter.
While on active duty, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Workforce Education and Development and a Master of Science in Education from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale as well as a Master of Arts in Economic from the University of Oklahoma.
His awards and decorations include four Navy and Marine Corps. Commendation Medals, seven Navy and Marine Corps. Achievement Medals, three Good Conduct Medals and various unit and campaign awards. He is authorized to wear the Submarine Warfare device (officer), Information Dominance Warfare Officer pin, and Enlisted Submarine Warfare device.
